Westar Resources, a prominent mining exploration company, has successfully obtained a grant from the Northern Territory Government, valued at A$55,689 (approximately $39,395 USD). This funding, awarded through the highly competitive Geophysics and Drilling Collaborations program, will be instrumental in conducting a comprehensive aeromagnetic survey at its Bunda Creek Project. Situated in the largely unexplored Birrindudu Basin of Australia, this initiative marks a significant step in the search for sediment-hosted copper and other base metal deposits, leveraging advanced geophysical techniques to unlock the region's mineral potential.
The planned aeromagnetic survey is set to encompass a substantial area of approximately 569 square kilometers within the Bunda Creek Project. This area includes the already granted exploration license EL34118, alongside a contiguous application, EL34358, ensuring a broad and thorough investigation. The primary objective of this high-resolution data acquisition is to meticulously map the structural architecture of the basin. This will involve pinpointing basement-tapping faults and identifying areas exhibiting potential hydrothermal alteration, both of which are crucial indicators for mineral accumulation.
Westar Resources' exploration efforts are specifically focused on discovering sediment-hosted copper and other valuable base metal deposits within this promising region. The company's successful bid for the government grant, achieved through a rigorous selection process that saw only 26 companies awarded, underscores the project's perceived potential and strategic importance. The Birrindudu Basin has recently garnered considerable attention from leading geological organizations, including the Northern Territory Geological Survey, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, and Geoscience Australia, all of whom have highlighted its significant prospects for copper mineralization.
Further supporting the project's viability, studies cited by Westar indicate the presence of a viable copper source. These studies also provide evidence of oxidized basinal fluids actively leaching copper, coupled with the identification of a suitable reductant within the Amos Knob formation. This geological confluence creates an ideal environment for the formation of significant mineral deposits. The current survey at Bunda Creek is designed to integrate with a previous survey conducted in 2013 to the west, thereby extending the comprehensive coverage across an expansive area of roughly 1,200 square kilometers within the region.
The detailed aeromagnetic survey aims to gather critical data concerning the basin's geological configuration at the project site. A particular focus will be placed on identifying north-north-west-trending faults, which are considered crucial pathways for mineralizing fluids to travel and deposit valuable elements. This undertaking also seeks to delineate zones characterized by complex structural formations, localized thinning of rock strata, and areas where the basement rock approaches closer to the surface, all of which are favorable conditions for mineral discovery.
Eddie King, the non-executive director of Westar Resources, expressed profound gratitude to the Northern Territory Government for its support. He emphasized that the co-funding provided through the Resourcing the Territory program is vital.
