Refresco, a leading global independent beverage bottler, has announced its agreement to acquire the business operations of Rhenser Mineralbrunnen, a German manufacturer specializing in mineral water and soft drinks. This acquisition follows Rhenser Mineralbrunnen's declaration of insolvency and has been approved by both the provisional insolvency administrator and the creditors' committee. The move is poised to strengthen Refresco's market position, particularly in the European mineral water sector, by integrating Rhenser's established brands and production facilities.
The acquisition ensures the continued operation and preservation of the Rhens-based company, which entered preliminary insolvency proceedings in March. Rhenser Mineralbrunnen is known for its mineral water, flavored waters, and sodas, marketed under popular brands like Rhenser, Silvetta, and WasserGlück. While the financial specifics of the transaction have not been disclosed, the deal encompasses significant assets, including the manufacturing plants located in Rhens.
Refresco's German division, which produces fruit juices, soft drinks, and milk alternatives for both retail and industrial clients, as well as co-manufactures for other brands, sees this as a pivotal expansion. Guido Kühne, Managing Director of Refresco's German arm, emphasized that the integration of Rhenser Mineralbrunnen will specifically enhance their brand portfolio and significantly boost their production capacity for mineral water in glass bottles. This strategic alignment underscores Refresco's commitment to growth and diversification within the beverage industry.
The transaction is slated for completion on August 1st, pending the fulfillment of customary closing conditions. A substantial number of Rhenser Mineralbrunnen's current employees are expected to transition to Refresco, ensuring continuity in operations and expertise, although specific employment figures were not provided by the new owner. This acquisition builds on Refresco's recent strategic moves, including its earlier acquisition of US food-and-beverage group SunOpta, aimed at expanding its footprint in the plant-based drinks market. Refresco reported robust financial performance in 2025, with revenues reaching €6.1 billion, demonstrating its capacity for strategic investments and market leadership.
This strategic move by Refresco to integrate Rhenser Mineralbrunnen's operations signifies a significant development in the German beverage market. By acquiring an established player in the mineral water segment, Refresco not only expands its product offerings but also reinforces its manufacturing capabilities, particularly for glass-bottled products. This acquisition is a testament to Refresco's ongoing strategy of growth through strategic mergers and acquisitions, aimed at solidifying its position as a global leader in beverage bottling.
